The Indian Premier League (IPL) has redefined the art of batting over the years. Since its inception in 2008, the mindset and approach of the batters have undergone a massive change. The nature of the T20 game and the rigours and demands of the IPL compel them to show positive intent or be forgotten.
Certain players have evolved their batting with the times while some have struggled to do so. The ones who have been successful at it have shown adaptability, aggression, and quick thinking. No wonder the evolution reflects in their gameplay and statistics – audacious strokeplay, muscular sixes, and record-breaking scoring sprees.
Topping the all-time run-scoring charts is Virat Kohli who has amassed 8730 runs from 268 matches for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) itself. Notably, Kohli’s tally of 973 runs in the 2016 season is the highest for a particular season of the league. Coming back to the list, the Indian star is followed by another batting maestro Rohit Sharma who has 7124 runs to his name from 273 matches.
The top five is composed of four Indians – Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina - apart from Kohli and Rohit. The one overseas name that has set the tournament alight on a number of occasions is the beloved Australian David Warner who is fourth on the list with 6565 runs from 184 matches. Remarkably, the southpaw has won the Orange Cap for the greatest number of times (3) in the tournament history.
Considering the fickle nature of T20s and the perennial pressure to maximise every ball, the achievements of the batting legends are remarkable. To accumulate thousands of runs in high-octane situations speaks volumes of their skill, consistency, and temperament. Indeed, the batting feats achieved in the biggest and most-followed T20 franchise league in the world indicate the best of what T20 cricket has to offer.
