Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a forgettable campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), finishing eighth on the points table with 12 points. After starting the season with three successive losses, CSK managed to win six out of their next eight fixtures. However, a hat-trick of losses right at the end meant that they were knocked out before the playoffs.
For the first time in their history, CSK failed to reach playoffs for three successive seasons, raising questions about their preparedness for the highly competitive league. As a result, some tough decisions will be on the way for the five-time champions as CSK head into the next season. Here are three players CSK might consider releasing ahead of the next season:

1. Parshant Veer
The 20-year-old was brought into the team with the hope of filling the void left by the legendary all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Being signed for a whopping INR 14.20 Crore at the auction, Veer became the joint-most expensive uncapped player in the history of IPL.
However, he couldn’t leave a big impact, scoring 90 runs from five innings at a strike rate of 134.32 and remaining wicketless in the two overs he bowled, giving away 25 runs. As a result, Veer failed to justify his price tag, and the management might think of releasing him and buying him again for a lower price at the auction.
2. Matthew Short
After signing the Australia all rounder for INR 1.50 Crore, CSK didn’t utilise him properly as Short only played three matches throughout the season. The 30-year-old scored just 60 runs at a strike rate of 117.64 and remained wicketless in his 3.1 overs, giving away 39 runs. With CSK having a settled opening unit and explosive hitters like Urvil Patel, Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan filling up the batting order, Short may find it tough to make it to the playing XI in the next season as well. Hence, he's also likely to be released by the team ahead of the 2027 edition.
3. Rahul Chahar
The wrist-spinner was signed for a whopping price of INR 5.20 at the mini auction, owing to his rich experience of playing in the T20 extravaganza. However, Chahar failed to fit into the CSK management’s plans and only played one match in the season against Punjab Kings (PBKS). He returned figures of 0/46 in his four overs and remained on the bench for the rest of the season. The CSK management might not be willing to hold on to Chahar for the next season and might consider freeing up some purse amount by releasing him.
