The five‑time champions Mumbai Indians endured a nightmare season in IPL 2026, unravelling like rookies as the tournament progressed. They managed just four wins in 14 matches, slumping to 10 defeats. By the barest of margins, MI avoided the wooden spoon, finishing ninth thanks to a slightly better net run rate (‑0.584) compared to Lucknow Super Giants (‑0.740).

With reports suggesting that preparations for IPL 2027 are already underway, MI may be forced to part ways with underperforming players to avoid a repeat of this disastrous campaign. Here are three names who could be released ahead of next season:

1. Trent Boult

A Mumbai Indians stalwart, Trent Boult ranks third in wickets (62) for MI among active players, behind Hardik Pandya (71) and Jasprit Bumrah (190). But in IPL 2026, he looked a shadow of his former self, taking just two wickets in five games, and conceding runs at an economy of 11.62.

Each wicket cost MI a staggering 94 runs. Retained for INR 12.50 crore, Boult’s returns no longer justify his price tag. At 36, with his international career behind him, Boult may be past his prime.

2. Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar’s ordinary season compounded MI’s bowling woes. With Jasprit Bumrah struggling for rhythm, Chahar was expected to step up but managed only eight wickets in eight matches, leaking runs at 10.39 economy.

Crucially, since he is not considered a reliable option at the death, Chahar needed to nail his performances in the powerplay, but he failed to deliver. His inability to dent opposition line‑ups early, combined with his limitations as a resource, may push MI to look beyond him. He was retained for INR 9.25 crore.

3. Robin Minz

In two seasons, Robin Minz has failed to make an impression with the Mumbai Indians. Across four games, he has scored just 12 runs with a strike rate of 63.16. His best score remains 5.

While supporters may argue he hasn’t had enough opportunities, the IPL is unforgiving to rookies who fail to seize their chances. Therefore, MI may decide to move on.
