While the All India Senior Men's Selection Committee's squad announcements for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, five-match T20I contest against England, and the 2026 Asian Games had several anticipated selections, they weren't devoid of shocking calls either.
As Team India usher in a new T20 era under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, let's look at the three decisions from the squad announcement that left many shocked:

1. Sacking of a T20 World Cup-winning skipper
Suryakumar Yadav's sacking as India's T20I captain has to go down as the biggest shocker. He led India undefeated to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 title and achieved what several captains had set out for, but none had accomplished. India became the first side to defend the title, win the trophy on home turf and complete a treble of T20 World Cup trophies.
Surya had also carried the team to the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025 title when the political tussle between India and Pakistan had overflowed onto the field of play. More significantly, he did it with aplomb and ensured India lifted the trophy (symbolic one) without conceding a game.
While his IPL form (270 runs in 13 innings, averaging 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54) made the case against him, his T20I record this year says the opposite. Surya has racked up 484 runs in 14 T20Is at an average of 44.00, a strike rate of 161.33, laced with four half-centuries. If Suryakumar feels hard done by the call, one cannot blame him. The selectors could have given him the time till England series before wielding the axe.
2. The call to drop Rinku Singh
Rinku Singh had an ordinary T20 World Cup, to be fair. He aggregated 24 runs in five innings at an average of 8.00 and a strike rate of 82.75, remaining unbeaten twice. While it may seem irrelevant to many, Rinku also had to leave the Indian camp midway through the tournament once to check on his ailing father. Therefore, it can't be ruled out that the deteriorating health of his father would also have been on his mind continuously.
However, Rinku turned it around in the IPL. The southpaw accumulated 295 runs in 11 innings for KKR at an astounding average of 59.00 and a strike rate of 148.98, including two fifties. And he did all that while being the vice-captain of a team that struggled throughout.
If IPL form was the reason to drop Suryakumar, why wasn’t it enough to keep Rinku?
3. Ishan Kishan not named vice-captain
What is equally shocking is the decision not to elevate Ishan Kishan as the vice-captain of the T20I team despite his recent accomplishments as a leader. He not only led Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in December last year, but he also did so by leading by example. The southpaw registered a dazzling hundred (101 off 49) in the final to help Jharkhand stomp over Haryana to the title.
He also finished as the leading run-getter (517 runs) in the tournament at a strike rate of 197.32, including two centuries and as many fifties.
He excelled even further when he was asked to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Pat Cummins' absence. After a solitary win in the first four games, Ishan led SRH to a hat-trick of victories before Pat Cummins came to take charge.
Ishan has consistently showcased that he can be a worthy captaincy candidate if groomed well, and can do that while making his bat do the talking. Therefore, the decision not to elevate him makes for a curious case study.
