The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League has been nothing short of a spectacle. Run‑fests have defined the season, and with batters and bowlers pushing boundaries, records were destined to tumble. Here are five landmark feats that have rewritten the IPL and T20 record books this year.

1. Highest total ever chased in IPL and T20 cricket

Punjab Kings scripted history on April 25 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, when they gunned down a mammoth 265 set by Delhi Capitals in Match 35. It is now the highest successful chase in T20 cricket, eclipsing their own record of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024.

2. Virat Kohli’s triple milestone

Virat Kohli continues to redefine batting greatness. In Match 39 against Delhi, he became the first player to breach the 9000‑run mark in IPL. Later, in Match 57 against KKR in Raipur, he raced past Chris Gayle to become the fastest to 14,000 T20 runs, achieving the feat in just 409 innings.

The same clash saw him notch his 10th T20 hundred, making him the first Indian to reach the milestone. Abhishek Sharma, meanwhile, sits tantalisingly close, one ton shy of Kohli’s tally.

3. Virat and Rohit surpass Dhoni for most caps

Two modern giants, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have now become the most capped players in IPL history with 279 appearances each to date, overtaking MS Dhoni’s tally of 278. With Dhoni struggling with his calf injury, it seems unlikely that he would be able to catch up.

4. Punjab Kings’ unwanted record

While PBKS have thrilled fans with audacious chases, they also hold an unenviable distinction: most losses while defending 200+ totals in T20 cricket. With 10 such defeats, they top the list, ahead of West Indies, who have eight. It’s a stat that highlights their bowling frailties in high‑scoring encounters.

5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s pace milestone

Bhuvneshwar Kumar etched his name in IPL folklore by becoming the first pacer to claim 200 wickets. He reached the landmark in Match 11 against Chennai Super Kings in Bengaluru, dismissing Ayush Mhatre. The achievement underscores his skill, longevity, and mastery of swing bowling in the shortest format.

The 2026 season has been a carnival of records, redefining benchmarks across batting, bowling, and team performances. With such milestones, IPL continues to reaffirm its reputation as arguably the most exhilarating T20 league in the world.
