The Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, was a watershed moment in the IPL. It changed the dynamics of the league, reducing the significance of allrounders and placing greater emphasis on specialists. Sending the right Impact Player has become paramount, often tilting games and proving the difference between victory and defeat.

Yet in IPL 2026, there were several instances where teams misfired with their Impact Sub choices. Here are seven examples where the tactic backfired:

1. RR vs CSK (Match 3)

Batting first, CSK were reeling at 19/3 in 3.1 overs against Rajasthan Royals. They substituted Ayush Mhatre with Sarfaraz Khan as their Impact Player. The move failed, Sarfaraz managed just 17, and CSK collapsed to an eight‑wicket defeat.

2. LSG vs DC (Match 5)

LSG were 105/6 after 13.1 overs and replaced Mitchell Marsh with allrounder Shahbaz Ahmed. In an era where specialists dominate Impact Sub roles, the choice raised eyebrows. Shahbaz scored 15* off 16 and bowled only one over, conceding 16 runs. LSG lost by six wickets.

3. PBKS vs SRH (Match 17)

SRH posted 219 and replaced Travis Head with Jaydev Unadkat against Punjab Kings. The left‑arm pacer bowled three overs, conceding 40 runs at 13.33 per over without a wicket. SRH lost by six wickets.

4. DC vs PBKS (Match 35)

Defending 264, Delhi Capitals substituted Pathum Nissanka (11 off 7) with Auqib Nabi. Nabi leaked 41 runs in just two overs, at an alarming economy of 20.50. DC lost by six wickets.

5. CSK vs GT (Match 37)

CSK, struggling at 25/2, brought in Sarfaraz Khan for Urvil Patel. Sarfaraz fell for a golden duck, and CSK managed only 158. Gujarat Titans cruised to an eight‑wicket win at Chepauk.

6. MI vs SRH (Match 41)

After posting 243, MI substituted Robin Minz with Shardul Thakur. But Shardul wasn’t given a single over to bowl. MI lost by six wickets.

7. RCB vs MI (Match 54)

MI scored 166 and replaced Rohit Sharma (22 off 10) with leg‑spinner Raghu Sharma. Raghu wasn’t used at all with the ball. RCB won by two wickets in a last‑ball thriller.

The Impact Player rule has redefined the IPL, but these examples show how the failure of the Impact Sub can undo even the strongest sides. Whether it was persisting with out‑of‑form batters, sending an allrounder, or failing to deploy bowlers, the wrong call at the wrong time proved costly.
