The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Ajinkya Rahane, has been fined INR 12 lakhs for breaching Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, for maintaining a slow over-rate against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during match No. 22 of the ongoing 19th edition of the Indian Premier League.

Rahane has become the fifth captain to be penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate. Punjab Kings' Shreyas Iyer, Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill, Chennai Super Kings' Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mumbai Indians' captain Hardik Pandya have already been penalised for the same. Shreyas has been sanctioned twice for the offence.

Meanwhile, Rahane has bigger issues to deal with as KKR are yet to get over the line this season and remain the only winless team in the competition. They are understandably at the bottom of the points table with four losses in five games and a no result, which yielded the solitary point they possess. They have a net run rate (NRR) of -1.383.

They suffered a chastening defeat at the hands of Chennai Super Kings, as they went down by 32 runs in pursuit of 193 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 14. Electing to bowl first, KKR dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad inside the first three overs to dent CSK, but couldn't make any further inroads soon enough to stem the flow of runs.

On a wicket that started gripping and turning at the halfway mark of CSK's innings, Rahane chose not to bowl the entire quota of Varun Chakravarthy. Varun finished with figures of 0/26 in three overs.

In reply, KKR adopted a new opening combination, sending out Sunil Narine alongside Finn Allen, but it didn't bear fruit. Both of them were back in the hutch before the end of the fifth-over mark, and it put a lot of pressure on the middle order.

Rahane (28 off 22) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (27 off 19) added 50 runs for the third wicket to stabilise the innings, but couldn't really kick on. Rovman Powell (31* off 22) and Ramandeep Singh (35 off 23) showed some fight towards the end, but it was too little too late for KKR.
