Jake Weatherald has copped the brunt of Australia's mortifying loss to Bangladesh in the Test series opener in Darwin. The southpaw has been left out of the 13-player squad announced for the second Test, which remains the only change to the outfit picked for the match at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.
Weatherald managed 23 and 0 in the first and second innings of the series opener. Hasan Mahmud nicked off him in the first innings as he edged an attempted drive to wicketkeeper Litton Kumer Das.
Weatherald fell to the same bowler in the second innings, chopping a short ball, pitched outside off, onto his stumps. The southpaw tried to force it square of the wicket on the off-side, but it was too close to cut, and he ended up dragging it onto his stumps.
Weatherald had also tweaked his technique during his recent county stint, but former players like David Warner pointed out that it wasn't as impregnable as he would have liked to believe.
Queensland's Matt Renshaw has replaced Weatherald for the Mackay Test. Renshaw had a productive Sheffield Shield 2025-26 season. He aggregated 499 runs in 10 innings, averaging 49.90, including three hundreds and a fifty. His last Test appearance came against India in Delhi in February 2023. The left-hander has racked up 645 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 29.31, laced with one century and three fifties.
The axe is also hanging over Marnus Labuschagne, who has not scored a Test hundred since July 2023. Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald has also conceded that Australia's No. 3 needs to score and shoulder the burden of run-scoring.
