Cricket Australia and BCCI's relationship brings BBL to India
It is the amicable relationship between the BCCI and Cricket Australia that the BBL is going overseas for the first time since its inception in 2011. The 2026-27 BBL opener will be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The tournament opener will see the defending champions Perth Scorchers go against Melbourne Renegades on December 12.
The head of BBL operations and club growth, Phil Rigby, believes that the staging of a solitary game in Chennai might not just be a one-off thing.
"I think this isn't about a one-off thing," Phil Rigby, head of BBL operations and club growth, was quoted as saying by Cricinfo at a BBL event at Chepauk. "We've got to deliver the first game first, and then we'll worry about the future. But we definitely would like to continue to do this in the future, and those conversations will be ongoing with the TNCA [Tamil Nadu Cricket Association] and the BCCI."
