The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will make history by hosting the BBL 2026-27 season opener on December 12, when the Melbourne Renegades face defending champions Perth Scorchers. The announcement, made on July 10, marks the first time a Big Bash League fixture will be staged overseas.

The game will count as a home fixture for the Renegades and is scheduled to begin at 2:40 PM local time (8:10 PM AEST), immediately after the conclusion of day four in the Australia vs New Zealand Test in Perth.

A landmark announcement

The overseas fixture was officially unveiled during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two‑day visit to Australia, where he was joined by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at an event. The match is partly funded by a grant from the Centre of Australia‑India Relations, with Cricket Australia (CA) aiming to make it a sell‑out and leverage commercial opportunities around the occasion.

CA is also hopeful that this initiative could pave the way for staging an IPL game in Australia in the future.

"There's certainly been interest from time to time at state government level and at venue level, and with some of our clubs to imagine what that could look like bringing an IPL game out here," said Alistair Dobson, executive general manager of Big Bash Leagues. "The IPL's next level, isn't it, and it would bring an amazing connection. We've seen already the hype around an NFL game in Melbourne.

"It's not necessarily connected to this event or this initiative, but the opportunity to have those discussions when the time's right, I'm sure we'd be open to that, as would everyone across Australian cricket, because the IPL's got a huge following already in Australia."

Setting a precedent

T20 leagues rarely venture outside their home base unless circumstances demand it. The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) previously staged matches in Florida, while the IPL was hosted in South Africa and the UAE due to the COVID‑19 pandemic and Indian elections. Similarly, the PSL shifted to the UAE in earlier years amid security concerns for overseas players.

By bringing the BBL to Chennai, Cricket Australia is setting a bold precedent and one that could reshape how global T20 leagues engage with fans beyond their borders.
