India’s squad announcement for the upcoming tours of Ireland, England, and the Asian Games has provided a revealing glimpse into the selectors’ long‑term vision for the next two‑year cycle leading up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028.
The bold decision to drop Suryakumar Yadav and hand the T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer signalled a willingness to break away from the old guard and invest in fresh leadership. Beyond Iyer, four other players emerged as clear beneficiaries of this announcement.

1. Shreyas Iyer
No player gained more than Shreyas Iyer. At 31, he had been hovering on the fringes of India’s T20I setup, often overlooked due to the lack of vacancy in the middle order.
His elevation to captaincy is both a reward for persistence and a statement of trust. With the next T20 World Cup still two years away, the selectors have given Iyer the runway to stamp his authority, build a team in his image, and prove he can lead India into a new era.
2. Tilak Varma
Tilak Varma’s appointment as vice‑captain was arguably the most surprising twist. While his batting talent is undeniable, his leadership credentials remain untested as he has never captained in the IPL.
In fact, the selectors bypassed more seasoned options like Ishan Kishan, who has led Jharkhand and shown tactical nous in franchise cricket. Tilak’s rise reflects the selectors’ desire to groom him early, but it also places him under scrutiny: can he grow into the role, or will the lack of experience be exposed?
3. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Few stories are as remarkable as that of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Just weeks after lifting the U19 World Cup, the 15‑year‑old finds himself named in squads for Ireland, England, and the Asian Games. At 15 years and 71 days, his call‑up is historic, a leap that even he might not have imagined. The decision underlines the selectors’ boldness in fast‑tracking prodigious talent.
4. Harshit Rana
Harshit Rana’s inclusion is a story of faith. Having missed the 2026 T20 World Cup and the entire IPL season due to knee surgery, Rana has only just returned to training and has not yet featured in high‑intensity competition. Yet, the selectors have backed him, signalling their belief in his potential as a fast‑bowling allrounder.
5. Ravi Bishnoi
Ravi Bishnoi’s fortunes have swung back in his favour. After an ordinary IPL with Rajasthan Royals, 11 wickets in nine matches at an economy of 9.88, he was sidelined by his franchise in favour of Yash Raj Punja.
Yet, the national selectors have chosen continuity, reaffirming their faith in Bishnoi. His inclusion suggests that they value his skillset beyond recent form, and believe he can rediscover his spark on the international stage.
