David Miller in South Africa's ODI World Cup plans, named in squad for Australia series

David Miller is part of South Africa’s 50‑over World Cup plans, with the selection committee naming him in their 16‑member squad for the upcoming three‑match ODI series against Australia.

Former captain Quinton de Kock has also been included, a clear indication that both southpaws remain central to the selectors’ thinking for next year’s marquee tournament in southern Africa. Both players are currently outside the central contract system, and last represented the Proteas at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year.

"Quinny [Quinton de Kock] is going to be playing whenever we need him to play," South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad said on Monday. "ODI cricket is probably Quinny's best format and he will play all the ODIs. David will play Australia and probably miss Bangladesh because he has ILT20 commitments."

Gerald Coetzee returns to the ODI setup, while Kagiso Rabada continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Coetzee last played 50‑over cricket for South Africa at the previous World Cup in India in 2023. He recently featured for South Africa A against England Lions and Bangladesh A.

"It's great to see Gerald back in the fold and, by all accounts, he's been bowling nice and quickly," Conrad said.

"KG is out of the ODIs and we are constantly monitoring his rehabilitation. When we sit down to select a Test squad, we will make an informed decision. He is tracking nicely, going on reports from physios," Conrad was quoted as saying during a press conference on Monday by Cricinfo. "Anrich Nortje was not considered for the ODIs. I don't think he has done enough for now, but don't be surprised if he plays the Bangladesh series."

Dewald Brevis, South Africa’s leading run‑getter in the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe and Namibia, has not been included for the Australia ODIs.

"Everybody that is not here or in the A side will be playing the first round of first‑class cricket," Conrad said. "And everyone not in the ODI squad will play in the second round. That includes Dewald. He competes for a spot in the middle order and there he competes with Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller. He will definitely get a crack in ODI in the Bangladesh series."

Lhuan‑dre Pretorius and Andile Simelane have been ruled out of the Namibia ODIs with adductor and abdominal injuries respectively.
