India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has been warned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his dangerous throw towards a batter during the first ODI against England on July 14 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Brar was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and or dangerous manner during an international match.”

He has also been handed one demerit point as part of his disciplinary record, which had its first offence in 24 months. The incident took place in the eighth over of the first innings after England elected to bat first.

England opener Ben Duckett drove the ball straight back to Gurnoor Brar, who threw it back in the batter’s direction. Brar admitted the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee, Richie Richardson, removing the need for a formal hearing.

Brar came on to bowl his first spell during the first Powerplay but had an expensive start, conceding 26 runs from his two overs. However, after switching ends, he struck twice in the same over, removing England openers Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell to trigger a collapse that saw the hosts lose five wickets in a space of 27 deliveries for just 19 runs.

India take a 1-0 lead in the series

The 26-year-old eventually finished with figures of 2 for 61 from nine overs. He was due to bowl the 48th over but walked off the field, clutching his right calf. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, along with third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Russell Warren.

A Level 1 offence carries a minimum sanction of an official reprimand, with the maximum punishment being a fine of 50 per cent of a player's match fee and one or two demerit points.

Meanwhile, India won the first ODI by six wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The two teams will next lock horns in the second ODI on Thursday, July 16 at Sophie Gardens, Cardiff.
