ENG vs PAK: Pakistan docked 11 WTC points for maintaining slow over rate in Birmingham Test

After suffering a 3-0 whitewash in the recent Test series against England, Pakistan have suffered heavy sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC).  The Babar Azam-led side has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the third Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

They were found 11 overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration and have been fined 50 per cent of their match fee. They have also faced an 11-point deduction in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 percent of the match fee.

In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, 11 World Test Championship points have been deducted from Pakistan’s points total.

Pakistan continue to reel at ninth spot

ICC Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the sanction after on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren levelled the charge.

As a result, Pakistan’s condition has worsened at the bottom of the WTC points table for the 2025-27 cycle. They’re ranked ninth (last) with two wins from nine matches, having five points to their name.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will next take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series in November in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
