England have decided to prioritise the 50-over format with the ODI World Cup in southern Africa just a year away, resting their frontline fast bowlers for the T20I series against Australia. Sonny Baker, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue have been named in England's squad for the three-match ODI series.
Somerset's 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew and Hampshire pacer Eddie Jack have earned their maiden England call-ups and will be part of the five-match T20I series.
Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is missing from both squads after recently undergoing surgery on his injured left hamstring and is expected to be sidelined for an extended period. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood has been recalled to the T20I squad despite losing his central contract.
"The returns of Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer for the ODI series mean that we will be close to full strength as we ramp up preparations for a World Cup in a year's time," Marcus North, England's national selector, said in a statement. "The four quick bowlers will then leave after the three-game ODI series as we look to manage them ahead of the Test tour of South Africa."
North is confident that the T20I side, led by Harry Brook, will be able to handle the challenge of playing in Australian conditions.
"Our T20 team has been in excellent form under captain Harry Brook, and we are looking forward to the opportunity to test ourselves in Australian conditions against a very good team," North said.
"We will have four uncapped players in an exciting T20 squad, including Thomas Rew and Eddie Jack, both of whom toured Australia with the England Lions last year and have now earned their first England call-ups."
