Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has received major relief from the Delhi High Court after it directed tech platforms such as Google, Meta, and Amazon to remove objectionable online content that allegedly misused the name and identity of the former India cricketer.
Gambhir had sought legal action for the protection of his personality rights after several objectionable posts related to him went viral across social media and internet platforms. The civil suit, filed before the Delhi High Court, sought protection of his personality rights along with damages of Rs 2.5 crore and immediate takedown of such content.

During the hearing, Gambhir’s legal team alleged that his name, voice, and photographs were being misused for commercial purposes without his consent. Technologies such as deepfakes and AI manipulation were being deliberately exploited for this purpose. Gambhir’s petition also highlighted how people were creating fake videos and misusing his identity on social media to increase views and engagement.
AI-generated fake videos showing Gambhir resigning from the post of Indian cricket team coach were also widely shared, and one such video even garnered 2.9 million views in a short span of time. Apart from that, another misleading clip showing him falsely making disparaging remarks against senior cricketers drew over 17 lakh views.
Gambhir guides India to T20 World Cup win
According to India Today, a single-judge bench ordered the removal of all such content and even asked platforms to provide details of the entities responsible for uploading it.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Gambhir recently guided India to their second successive T20 World Cup triumph, winning the title on home soil. As a result, India became the first team to defend its T20 World Cup title and also win the tournament as hosts. It was also the second ICC title victory under Gambhir’s coaching after India earlier won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
