India registered a historic win in the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s, beating England by 270 runs on Day 4 of the match on Monday, July 13. Chasing a massive target of 457 runs, England were skittled for 186 in 62.5 overs as Sneh Rana (4/42) ran through their batting.

England resumed the innings on 130/6 with Amy Jones (52*) and Sophie Ecclestone (1*) at the crease. The duo started cautiously before Jones hit Sneh Rana straight to Shafali Verma at mid-wicket as England’s last hope went back into the pavilion, leaving her team on 135/7.

Following her dismissal, Ecclestone continued to fight a lone battle and was even given a reprieve by Sneh Rana, who dropped her in the slip on 8, after Kranti Gaud (2/54) managed to find her edge. She was given another life on 16 as Gaud again found her edge which flew past Yastika Bhatia behind the stumps.

However, Deepti Sharma (2/36), brought India on the cusp of victory by shattering Issy Wong and Lauren Bell’s stumps in successive overs, leaving England on 159/9. However, Ecclestone was in no mood to surrender and tried delaying the inevitable, playing some shots.

Kranti Gaud named Player of the Match

The tailender had the rub of the green on her side as she even managed to overturn an lbw decision via DRS after being given out on the field on 44. She went on to score her maiden Test half-century off 61 balls and frustrated India a bit, forging a 27-run stand for the last wicket, alongside Lauren Filer (4).

However, Sneh Rana once again came to her team’s rescue and cleaned up Ecclestone (50) to complete a historic win for her team. As a result, India registered their ninth victory in Tests and their fourth against England. It was also their second-highest victory in terms of runs, having earlier beaten England by 347 runs in Navi Mumbai, 2023.

Meanwhile, Kranti Gaud was adjudged Player of the Match for registering match figures of 7/91, having earlier scalped a five-wicket haul in the first innings.
