Despite winning three out of their four matches in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, India are yet to qualify for the semi-finals of the event. The Women in Blue are placed second in the Group A points table with six points to their name and are being closely followed by South Africa, who also have six points from four matches.
All teams now only have one more match remaining in the group stage, and only three semi-final spots are up for grabs as England have already made it to the last four. Australia are also almost into the knockout stages, having won all four of their matches so far. They’re ranked at the top in Group A with eight points, having a net run rate of +4.724.
How can India qualify?
That leaves just one semi-final spot up for grabs in Group A, with India, South Africa and Bangladesh in contention for sealing it. For India to qualify without much trouble, they need to beat Australia in their last fixture on June 28. A victory will be enough to ensure a smooth qualification to the semi-finals for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side.
However, if they end up losing to Australia, the path to the knockout stages will only get trickier for India. South Africa also play their last match on the same day as they take on Bangladesh at Lord’s. If the Proteas fall short against Bangladesh, India can qualify even after losing to Australia as they have a superior net run rate (+2.268) to South Africa (+0.734).
What if South Africa beat Bangladesh?
They will just have to ensure that the defeat margin doesn’t bring their net run rate below South Africa and that would be enough to seal their semi-final spot. But South Africa’s victory over Bangladesh will put India in a precarious position, as they will have to beat Australia at any cost to advance.
India's record against Australia
Like most teams, India don't have a great head-to-head record against Australia, having won ten out of 38 T20Is played between the two teams. However, out of the three losses Australia have suffered in T20 World Cups since 2018, two have come against India in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
Moreover, the Women in Blue also ended Australia's 15-match unbeaten streak in the Women's ODI World Cup 2025, knocking them out in the semi-final.
They also beat them by 2-1 in the last T20I series played between the two teams in Australia in February, 2026. Hence, the Women in Blue have several happy memories of beating Australia in recent times and will head into the upcoming fixture high on confidence.
