IPL 2026 has been a festival of batting pyrotechnics. Bowlers have been carted to every corner, and the crowd has been treated to a relentless barrage of boundaries. Yet, while the season has been a paradise for batters, it has also exposed the imbalance in certain line‑ups. Not every franchise has enjoyed depth; some have leaned almost entirely on their top three to keep the scoreboard ticking.

This reliance on the opening trinity is a double‑edged sword. When they fire, totals swell, and also make chases look easy. But when they falter, the middle order is left scrambling. Among the 10 franchises, three stand out for their heavy dependence on their top three. Let’s rank them by how much of their total runs have come from the top order, using data procured through their 11th match.

1. Gujarat Titans

  • Total runs: 1943

  • Top‑three runs: 1260 (Shubman Gill 462, Sai Sudharsan 440, Jos Buttler 348)

  • Percentage of runs scored by the top-three (64.8%): Titans are the most top‑heavy outfit this season. Gill’s class, Sudharsan’s consistency, and Buttler’s explosiveness at three have combined for nearly two‑thirds of the team’s tally. Their middle order hasn't shouldered much responsibility, making Gujarat the most dependent side on its top‑three.

2. Rajasthan Royals

  • Total runs: 1996

  • Top‑three runs: 1069 (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 440, Yashasvi Jaiswal 315, Dhruv Jurel 314)

  • Percentage of runs scored by the top-three (53.6%): Royals’ top‑three have contributed just over half the team’s runs. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been the standout, with Jaiswal and Jurel adding solidity. While the middle order has chipped in, the Royals’ fortunes still hinge on their top‑order firing.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad

  • Total runs: 2332

  • Top‑three runs: 1245 (Abhishek 475, Kishan 409, Head 361)

  • Percentage of runs scored by the top-three (53.4%): SRH’s top three have been destructive, consistently laying the platform. Abhishek Sharma’s exquisite timing, Kishan’s left‑handed flair, and Head’s power have accounted for more than half the team’s runs. Their middle order has been more involved than Gujarat’s, but the reliance remains significant.

Among these three, Titans are the most reliant on their top three, with nearly 65% of their runs coming from Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler. Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad hover around the 53% mark, still heavily dependent but with slightly more depth. In a season where bowlers are gasping for breath, these numbers underline how crucial the top‑order has been in shaping team fortunes.
