Match Overview
Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns in the 14th match of IPL 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, April 8. DC captain Axar Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The GT openers - Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill - began well with a 11-run first over bowled by Mukesh Kumar. However, the pacer got his revenge as soon as he came on to bowl his second over sending back the southpaw for 12(7). Jos Buttler joined his skipper in the middle and the duo built a substantial partnership of 60 off 32 balls. Buttler, who had been going through a rough patch of late, finally fired and scored his 25th IPL half century off 29 balls before Kuldeep went through the Englishman's defence.

GT found themselves at 101/2 at the halfway mark as Washington Sundar and Shubman Gill now combined to build another big partnership. The left-right pair targeted the bowlers smartly and added runs at a healthy rate throughout. The stand grew ominously for DC and the home team needed a breakthrough desperately, but it did not come until the 18th over when Gill who scored his first fifty of the season was dismissed for 70(45) by Lungi Ngidi.
Meanwhile, Sundar continued to take the team forward along with Glenn Phillips (14* off 9) at the death, in the process completing his first-ever IPL half century in 30 balls. GT finished at 210/4 in their full quota of overs as Ngidi stood out for DC with figures of 4-0-24-1.
DC openers - KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka - began the team's response with intent. The right-handers complemented each other but the scoring rate was not rising as much as it should have until Nissanka took apart pacer Ashok Sharma in the sixth over to end the powerplay at a much-improved 63 for no loss. The pair seemed very much comfortable by this stage but a mishit by Nissanka (41 off 24) soon after led to his downfall, leaving DC at 76/1 in the ninth over.
Nitish Rana joined KL Rahul, but could not contribute much in terms of runs as Rashid Khan dismissed the southpaw for 5(6). One ball later, Rashid provided the big wicket of in-form Sameer Rizvi who was bamboozled by a googly to be dismissed for a golden duck. DC needed 110 runs off the last 10 overs as Rahul now had David Miller's company. But, the South African had to retire hurt not long after as he appeared to injure his hand while running between the wickets.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul continued to play in his own way at the other end and went past the 50-run mark for the first time this season. However, skipper Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs could not contribute much as DC seemed to lose their way. In fact, KL Rahul too was dismissed in a short while but not before scoring a majestic 92(52). Miller came back to the middle with his team in trouble and combined with Vipraj Nigam to bring DC back into the game with a 34-run 16-ball partnership at the death.
A 23-run penultimate over bowled by Siraj brought DC within touching distance with 13 runs required off the last over. Miller and Kuldeep Yadav brought it down to two needed off two balls as the former took strike to Prasidh Krishna. This is where the equation changed as Miller denied an easy single off the fifth delivery of the over to face the last ball.
Krishna bowled a superb slower bouncer which Miller failed to connect and the batters went for a single to tie the game but Kuldeep failed to make it at the striker's end as Buttler knocked the stumps over with an accurate under-arm throw to give GT a thrilling one-run win. Notably, it is the team's first win of the season while DC lost by a margin of one run for the fourth time in the league history.

The Afghan all-rounder finally produced a bowling performance which he is known for. The leg spinner turned the game around with an incisive and tight spell which rocked the DC middle order. Rana and Rizvi were dismissed off consecutive balls in the 10th over while Axar was caught four overs later. Out of the three scalps, Rizvi's was the most important one given the batter's form and put DC behind the eight-ball.
Turning Point
In a game which see-sawed several times, the most significant moment came in the last over with two runs needed in as many balls. Miller's denial of a single off the penultimate ball made the equation tougher. Eventually, the Proteas' gamble failed to pay off as he could not finish off the game or even tie it.
What the captains said
Winning Team Captain, Shubman Gill (GT)
"All three games we have played have gone in the last over. (When Miller didn't take the single, I thought) we have a chance to win! We decided if we bowl a good slower one, it will be difficult to hit for a boundary. Those five or six runs in fielding makes a difference. Every effort counts. 210 we always thought on this wicket we were 10-15 runs above par. We thought if we bowl well, we should be able to win. Now I just need to sleep and see how I wake up tomorrow!"
Losing Team Captain, Axar Patel (DC)
"Both teams played very good cricket. These types of close games you can't point out anything. We could have been smarter in the chase. We lost wickets at crucial times. If not for that, we could have finished the chase off. Rahul kept the momentum on even after the powerplay, and despite wickets. He didn't let the run rate go down."
