The much-awaited victory for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) finally arrived as they hammered Gujarat Titans (GT) by 99 runs on Monday, April 20 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After being put in to bat first, Mumbai posted a good score of 199/5 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on a splendid hundred from Tilak Varma.

In reply, GT’s chase never got going as they got bundled out for 100 in 15.5 overs, with Ashwani Kumar taking four wickets, while AM Ghazanfar (2/17) and Mitchell Santner (2/16) also chipped in with two wickets each. It was a historic win for MI as they registered their maiden win over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad after suffering four losses.

Earlier in the day, MI once again got off to a disastrous start as Kagiso Rabada (3/33) rattled their top order, dismissing Danish Malewar (2 off 4), Quinton de Kock (13 off 11) and Suryakumar Yadav (15 off 10) in the powerplay.

Tilak Varma walked in at number five and stitched a 52-run stand off 40 balls with Naman Dhir (45 off 32) for the fourth wicket. Dhir missed out on his half-century, falling prey to Prasidh Krishna.

Following his dismissal, Varma switched gears and brought up his maiden IPL century off just 45 balls, which was also the joint fastest for MI in IPL history. Courtesy of his blitzkrieg, MI posted 199/5, a score that seemed out of their reach at one point.

In the second innings, GT’s chase got off to a disastrous start as Jasprit Bumrah’s wicket drought finally ended by dismissing Sai Sudharsan off the very first delivery.

GT further lost Jos Buttler (5 off 6) and Shubman Gill (14 of 13) inside the powerplay and were left tottering at 40/3 in 4.4 overs. They couldn’t really recover after a dismal start and were skittled for 100, handing MI a massive 99-run win.

Player of the Match

Tilak Varma was adjudged Player of the Match for his breathtaking century that turned the game in MI's favour. He scored an unbeaten 101* off 45 balls with eight fours and seven sixes to his name.

Turning Point

Tilak Varma was batting on 19* (22) with MI on 103/4 after 14 overs. He took on Prasidh Krishna in the very next over, smashing him for a six, followed by a couple of boundaries as MI got 19 runs from his over. The over gave the impetus that Varma desperately needed in his innings as he went on to slam a breathtaking century that shifted momentum in MI's favour.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians):

Very important. It is always challenging to go away and win. Also, Ahmedabad has not been a happy ground for Mumbai Indians, so very satisfying. The talent Tilak has he does not need much advice. It was about time he comes and delivers. It was much needed for the group, for Tilak and Mumbai Indians. Quite fascinating, I have seen many people asking why Jassi hasn't bowled with the new ball, but he hasn't bowled with the new ball, maybe 7 or 8 times, so it is not a Hardik Pandya problem, it is Jassi being special. It was about bowling in the right areas and bowling with a right intent. Really amazing by the youngsters, so fielding had to click, special mention to Naman as well.

Losing Captain, Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans):

Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the middle overs. On a wicket like that, I think 160-170 was a par score. But I think there are a lot of learnings for us from this game. (Makes you go back to the drawing board?) I mean, a small hiccup, but now we’ve got a couple of games on the road, so hopefully we will come back on the winning side again. (What do you think you could have done better?) I think the wicket was a little bit on the slower side. I don’t think we hit the right areas. The length ball wasn’t coming on as well, some balls were coming, some weren’t, and some were keeping low. I think we could have hit that length in the middle overs a bit more consistently, which we were not able to. (Did the pitch change when they were batting?) I think it was pretty similar. If at all, it could have gotten a little bit better because I think there was a bit more dew when we were batting.
