Match Overview
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) locked horns in the fifth match of IPL 2026 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, April 1. DC captain Axar Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The LSG openers - Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant - began steadily before misfortune struck the latter as a Mukesh Kumar touch in the bowler's follow through caught Pant out of the crease for 7(9). Aiden Markram joined Marsh in the middle as the right-handers accelerated gradually. However, Axar dismissed the South African for 11(8) to end the powerplay at 48/2.

The wheel started to turn in favour of DC now as new man Ayush Badoni lasted only three balls for no run. The run rate started to drop as stroking the ball was becoming slightly difficult with every over. That made Lungi Ngidi utilise the conditions perfectly to bowl Nicholas Pooran with an off-cutter for 8(8). Four balls later, it was Kuldeep Yadav's turn to deceive the well-set Marsh who was caught at mid-off for 35(28).
LSG were in trouble at the halfway mark at 80/5 as Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary came together to form a much-needed 34-run 22-ball partnership before the latter was dismissed by Kuldeep for 14(11). Shahbaz Ahmed joined forces with Samad and the duo put on another 30+ stand to take LSG to a potentially respectable score. Eventually, the home team finished at 141 all out with eight balls left in the innings.
LSG needed to start well to stand a chance to defend their low total and they did so. Mohammed Shami dismissed KL Rahul off the first delivery, achieving the phenomenon of picking up a wicket off the first ball of an innings for the fifth time. A brief partnership ensued between IPL debutant Pathum Nissanka and Nitish Rana before the latter edged a Mohsin Khan delivery to first slip.
LSG were riding the wave at the moment as right-arm speedster Prince Yadav provided a double blow, sending back Nissanka (1 off 5) and Axar for a golden duck. DC were 26/4 in no time as a very much gettable target seemed too distant suddenly. However, Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi held fort and saw off the new ball threat. The pair were cautious at the beginning but soon started stroking the ball freely.
The game was slipping away from LSG's hands as the duo went from strength to strength. Rizvi became the aggressor-in-chief at one stage and there was no looking back for DC. LSG were in dire need of a breakthrough but there was going to be none whatsoever. Rizvi, who came in as Impact Sub, completed his second IPL fifty off 37 balls as DC inched towards victory. In the end, the duo took their team home with a remarkable unbroken 119-run stand, winning the game by six wickets and 17 balls remaining.

Player of the Match
Sameer Rizvi
Rizvi came in to bat at number four after Rana's wicket. Before he could get settled, a couple of wickets went down quickly. The DC batter showed character and put in the hard yards with Stubbs to build a partnership with measured aggression. The 22-year-old, who was retained by the franchise, repaid the faith in the first match of the season itself.
Turning Point
The unbroken 119-run partnership off 76 balls between Rizvi and Stubbs was the biggest turning point of the match. After being 26/4 on a wicket which supported the new-ball bowlers, the batters in the middle needed to play sensibly to avoid further mishaps. And they did it very well, taking their team home comfortably in the end.
What the captains said
Winning Team Captain, Axar Patel (DC)
"Game finished early, got close in the middle. The new ball was doing a bit, our chat was about a big partnership and we finished well. Happy with bowling. We knew it swung and seamed at the start. We told that to all new bowlers and they did well. There's a big boundary and I felt since the pitch was assisting pacers, I'd bowl them over me. Plan was to bring in Rizvi early. Ashutosh Sharma was also an option if the innings started well. Last year, Ashu proved himself first game and this time Rizvi. He's been excellent at practice, glad he pulled it off tonight."
Losing Team Captain, Rishabh Pant (LSG)
"Best way to recover from my dismissal is to ignore it as you can't control it. The way we batted, we couldn't get a partnership for long. The plan was for Pooran to take on the middle overs from No. 5. We had to get someone who could add a few runs as the impact player because we didn't have enough, on a good pitch. We had a role defined for Badoni, when we lose early wickets, that's the time he can make a mark. We wanted to explore left-right at the top as to stop them from bowling from the left-arm spinner. There was enough help with the new ball. But you can't put pressure on the opposition with 140. 20 extras hurt, at the same time, you try too much on a wicket like this and are trying to restrict them under 140."
