Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to winning ways in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), hammering Mumbai Indians (MI) by 103 runs in Match 33 on Thursday, April 23 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, CSK posted a humongous total of 207/6 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on a splendid hundred from Sanju Samson.

In reply, MI were bundled out for just 104 in 19 overs, registering their worst ever defeat (in terms of runs) in IPL history. Akeal Hosein ran through the MI batting line up while Noor Ahmad also chipped in with two wickets.

Earlier in the day, CSK once again lost their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad (22 off 14), who holed out to long off against AM Ghazanfar after a brief cameo. However, Samson looked in fine touch, stitching a crucial 40-run stand off 16 balls with Sarfaraz Khan (14 off 8).

While Sarfaraz lost his stumps to Mitchell Santner, Samson brought up his half-century off 26 deliveries. He continued to build useful stands with Dewald Brevis (21 off 11), Kartik Sharma (18 off 19) and Jamie Overton (15 off 7) to keep the run rate in check. Samson eventually brought up his second century of the season, guiding CSK past 200.

In reply, MI were rocked in the powerplay as Akeal Hosein removed Danish Malewar (0 off 1) in the very first over. He further shattered Naman Dhir’s (0 off 3) stumps, while Mukesh Choudhary made in-form Quinton de Kock (7 off 10) chop one back onto his wickets, to leave MI tottering at 11/3 in 2.3 overs.

After three early blows, Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 30) and Tilak Varma (37 off 29) tried to stabilise the innings with their 73-run stand off 56 balls. However, the duo failed to keep up with the climbing required run rate. Varma eventually perished against Akeal Hosein, who continued to run through MI batting line up.

As Varma returned to the pavilion, MI suffered a dramatic collapse, losing last seven wickets for 20 runs in 44 deliveries.

Player of the Match

Sanju Samson was adjudged Player of the Match for his magnificent century. He held one end after Gaikwad’s early dismissal and stitched crucial stands throughout the innings, while keeping the run rate in check. He scored an unbeaten 101* (54) with the help of 10 fours and six sixes.

Turning Point

Chasing a target of 208, MI needed to get off to a great start. However, all of their hopes were shattered after a brilliant opening spell by Akeal Hosein and Mukesh Choudhary. Hosein got Danish Malewar caught behind for a golden duck and later destroyed Naman Dhir’s stumps. At the other end, Mukesh Choudhary bowled Quinton de Kock to leave MI reeling.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings):

Pretty tough on him (Mukesh Choudhary), I would dedicate this win to him. All glory to him. Everyone chipped and wanted to be there for him. Feels good (on the win). My gut feeling wanted me to bat first. Me and Sanju said that it wasn't coming on nicely. Everyone chipped in really well. Even the 20s helped. Sanju played a magnificent knock and took us home. We have been doing well, it's just starting to click. We are trying to cover all the bases. Mukesh to Quinton, that set the momentum. He started off really well. It's a blessing to have Akeal and Noor. Everyone is settling. Everyone is calm and composed. We start from zero, it's about assessing.

Losing Captain, Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians):

I think that in the powerplay, losing that early wicket is always going to be tricky. You are always chasing the game and we could not cope up after that. (Did the pitch change in any way?) I would not say that. I’m not someone who would like to say that. They batted well, they scored 207. It was the same track, it is the same soil. We should have just batted well. (The spinners got the ball to grip, didn’t they?) Yes, I think even our spinners bowled pretty well. It’s just that Sanju played an outstanding knock. At the same point of time, their batters kept coming and kind of chipping in and got them to a decent total. I think more than a decent total on that track. For us to chase this down, we needed to have a good powerplay and the momentum had to be with us, but that could not happen. (Will there be more personnel change in the upcoming games?) I think that will be the chat where we will go back to again, go forward and figure out what we need to do. We have a couple of days. We just need to see what we can do best.
