Match Overview
Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) locked horns in the second match of IPL 2026 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, March 29. MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The new KKR opening pair of Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane got their team off to a flying start. After a couple of sedate overs, the pair unleashed taking out 17 and 26 runs from the third and fourth over bowled by IPL debutant AM Ghazanfar and Hardik, respectively. MI needed a breakthrough badly and local boy Shardul Thakur provided that in the sixth over in the form of the dangerous Allen who was dismissed for 37(17).

KKR ended the powerplay at 78/1 which is the fourth-highest powerplay total against MI in the league by any team. Rahane, who was now joined by the most expensive overseas player Cameron Green (18 off 10), continued in the same vein. The Australian, however, could not contribute with much as Thakur struck again. Despite the couple of wickets, KKR were cruising and reached the halfway mark with 120 runs on the board. Notably, Rahane carried on with his dazzling strokeplay and reached his 34th IPL fifty off 27 balls.
Angrish Raghuvanshi and Rahane built another substantial partnership, but it came at a much slower rate than the previous one and the KKR's projected score suffered a dent as a result. Eventually, the KKR skipper's crucial innings of 67 off 40 balls came to an end in the 14th over as it was Thakur again who brought about the breakthrough. Subsequently, Raghuvanshi (51 off 29), with notable contribution from Rinku Singh (33* off 21), helped the Knight Riders cross the 200-run mark and completed his third fifty. KKR ended up with a competitive 220/4 as Thakur finished with figures of 3/39.
Like KKR, MI also began their innings with a steady couple of overs before taking apart Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani in the third and fourth over, respectively. Rohit Sharma was the aggressor-in-chief as the former Mumbai captain blitzed to his 47th IPL fifty off just 23 balls. The duo of Rohit and Ryan Rickelton helped the team to a healthy 80 for no loss at the end of the powerplay as the problems for KKR did not look like reducing.
The Mumbai openers kept the foot on the pedal as it was Rickelton's turn now to raise the bat, reaching his half century in 24 balls. At the halfway mark, the target was well within sight as MI needed a very much gettable 98 runs. But, KKR finally struck in the 12th over courtesy an excellent catch from Anukul Roy to dismiss Rohit for 78(38). Rickelton carried on with Suryakumar, however the latter was out soon for 16(8).
KKR, who were almost out of the game, produced another breakthrough dismissing the man of the moment Rickelton for 81(43). Despite the scoring rate going down gradually, MI eventually cruised to victory by six wickets and five balls remaining. Notably, MI completed their highest successful chase in IPL history and broke their jinx of losing the first match of the season after 14 years.

Player of the Match
Shardul Thakur
The Mumbai lad produced three crucial breakthroughs, dismissing Allen, Green, and Rahane. The all-rounder not just dismissed the dangerous batters but also did so when MI needed wickets badly. Thakur's spell helped MI restrict KKR to a lower than anticipated total.
Turning Point
The opening partnership of 148 runs between Rohit and Rickelton took the game away from KKR. The onslaught deflated the morale of the bowling group as the batters piled on the agony on the Knight Riders. The game was almost over by the time the stand was broken as only a magnanimous effort from the visitors would have helped to turn things around.
What the captains said
Winning Team Captain, Hardik Pandya (MI)
"Obviously it's been a long wait (to win the season opener). Every time we've come we wanted to start the season on a high. The whole group is very glad we were able to do it. Modern cricket, plus we've seen what this wicket plays like. Credit to the bowlers, not letting KKR fly away to 240s or 250s. Those become tough targets but 220 is always chaseable. Rohit and Rickelton were outstanding. (On picking between Ricks and QDK) Ryan has done very well for us last year. And Quinny is a top man. He understood that we are backing the man, and having continuity. Glad it worked. Whenever I see Ro play some shots, it opens everyone's mouth. Nothing short of excellent, nothing short of outstanding. (On Thakur) I told him, enough hopping franchises. You have to be here for the rest of your career. The way he outsmarts batters, the way he bowls, brilliant."
Losing Team Captain, Ajinkya Rahane (KKR)
"Feeling okay but lot of cramps, especially my calves. Hopefully I'll be okay. It was really tough (for bowlers) Inexperienced bowling attack, but these boys will learn. Strong batting lineup. So it's a learning curve. I thought MI batted well. So our bowlers will definitely learn. (On playing the way at his age) I'm still young, KP (Kevin Pietersen). But yeah really happy with the way I am batting in the moment. Hopefully Green starts to bowl soon and the combination will be slightly different. We batted really well but finding that balance with the ball is really important. (On why Green can't bowl) That question you need to ask Cricket Australia. (On positives) We batted well and I thought Kartik Tyagi bowled well. Played after a while but he was really good. Lot of positives and long way to go."
