Mumbai Indians’ (MI) dismal run continued in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) as they suffered their fourth successive loss of the season against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday, April 16, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, MI posted a good score of 195/6 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on a splendid century from Quinton de Kock.

In reply, PBKS chased down the target in 16.3 overs, courtesy of splendid knocks from Prabhsimran Singh (80* off 39) and Shreyas Iyer (66 off 35), winning by seven wickets.

MI got off to the worst possible start as Arshdeep Singh removed Ryan Rickelton (2 off 8) and Suryakumar Yadav (0 off 1) off consecutive balls in the third over. After the early blows, the onus was on Naman Dhir (50 off 31) and Quinton de Kock to rescue the innings, and the duo didn't disappoint. They got involved in a massive 122-run stand off 68 balls for the third wicket, to breathe life back into MI's innings

Their partnership was brought to an end by Shashank Singh, who got Dhir holed out at long off. At the other end, de Kock continued his brilliant knock and brought up his century off 53 balls. However, none of the other batters could help MI finish strongly as they finished their innings on 195/6.

In reply, Punjab began their chase in the usual fashion with Priyansh Arya (15 off 9) coming out all guns blazing. AM Ghazanfar (2/31) got the first strike for MI, getting Arya caught at mid-wicket. He further found the edge of Cooper Connolly’s (17 off 12) bat, leaving Punjab on 45/2 in 4.3 overs.

From there on, it was pure carnage at the Wankhede that was brought to a standstill courtesy of some fierce strokeplay from Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh. The duo added a massive 139 runs for the third wicket off 66 balls to bring Punjab into ascendancy.

PBKS eventually chased down the target without breaking a sweat to rise to the top of the points table. On the other hand, MI continued to reel at the second last spot (ninth) with just two points to their name.

Player of the Match

Arshdeep Singh was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance of 3/22 in four overs. He first dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav in his second over. He further got rid of the dangerous Sherfane Rutherford (1 off 5) to complete his three-wicket haul.

Turning Point

PBKS were put under pressure after two early wickets in the powerplay. The situation could've been worse if Bumrah had caught Prabhsimran Singh at short third man in the fourth over. The speedster ended up dropping a regulation catch, giving Prabhsimran a reprieve on 11. He went on to stitch a massive stand with Shreyas Iyer (66 off 35) of 139 runs for the third wicket that turned the game on its head.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings):

Certainly confident and optimistic the way we have been playing. Also we have our heads on our shoulder. I am glad that today we came out and got that victory. He has certainly raised up his bar, even though he was getting runs, he was giving us excellent starts, this year he has been more mature, match by match he is getting more mature. My catch. We have this tendancy of pulling things back, even against SRH, the way we bowled.. We haven't decided about that as of now, I have been luck to win the toss, lot of positive players in the team to go out and express themselves. I personally feel you need to keep getting better each and every game, that is the reciepe we keep following. I have seen the crowd coming in numbers and cheering us.

Losing Captain, Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians):

To be very honest, I don't have much to say right now. I think we really need to go back on the drawing board and see where are we lacking. Is it individuals? Is it as a group? Is it as planning? We'll just figure it out and see what we can do next. I think we need to give credit to them as well. The ball started reversing. In the second inning the dew came and it slightly got better but having said that, they just outbeat us. They bowled better, they batted better, they fielded better definitely and that talks to us again. No, I think we need to see, do we need to make some difficult calls or do we need to keep continuing and hope that we'll turn things around. These are some harsh questions which eventually we need to answer and yeah, ownership has to be taken.
