Punjab Kings continued their winning run in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 6 wickets in Match 17 on Saturday, April 11 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

After being put in to bat first, SRH posted a massive score of 219/6 in their allotted 20 overs, courtesy of Abhishek Sharma’s belligerent innings. In reply, Punjab comfortably chased down the daunting target in 18.5 overs, courtesy of half-centuries from Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer.

Earlier in the day, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head (38 off 23) got their team off to a rollocking start with 120-run opening partnership off 49 balls. Abhishek brought up his half-century off 18 balls and continued to press on the accelerator after completing his milestone.

Shashank Singh (2/20, 3 overs) brought Punjab back in the game by getting rid of both Head and Abhishek in the ninth over to bring SRH’s run rate down. Following their dismissals, captain Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen (39 off 33) continued to build on a good start with a 47-run stand off 33 balls for the third wicket.

Courtesy of some disciplined bowling from Punjab, runs became hard to come by in the death overs, as SRH could only score 22 runs in the last three overs, losing two wickets. They were eventually restricted to 219/6.

In reply, Punjab also got their chase off to an explosive start with openers Prabhsimran Singh (51 off 25), Priyansh Arya (57 off 20), adding 99 runs for the first wicket off 38 balls. A brilliant spell from Shivang Kumar helped SRH claw their way back into the game as he removed both the openers and Cooper Connolly (11 off 12).

With Punjab three down, Shreyas Iyer took it upon himself to get his team over the line and played a brilliant captain’s knock of 69* (33), studded with five fours and as many sixes. Courtesy of his innings, PBKS registered their third win of the season and maintained second position on the points table. On the other hand, SRH slipped to sixth spot, with three losses out of four games.

He scored an unbeaten 69* (33), and stitched a crucial 69-run stand with Nehal Wadhera (14 off 14) for the fourth wicket, which also proved to be the turning point of the match.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings):

We got a phenomenal start. It was magnificent to watch, was proper cricketing shots. It wasn't easy. I had to give myself some time and thankfully it worked out. All of us came together and Shashank approached me. I needed someone who bowls at 120. He lived up to his expectations. Kudos to him and his thought process. We want to maintain the same rhythm going forward. All of us know that we've got the skills. Openers, they don't need to curb their instincts. It's easy for us. We've been magnificent with our work ethics. I am very ecstatic. You need to be in the present. Ricky also takes a lot of importance in this. Last year, we came so close. This is the year we are eyeing the trophy. It's going to take a lot of effort.

Losing Captain, Ishan Kishan (Sunrisers Hyderabad):

A big score but not big enough today. In the middle, we could have ended up with a total of 250 at least the way we got started. But, the things happen. We did not end up getting those runs. But at the same time, they did actually bat well in the beginning and they also had the powerplay on their side. At the same time, I feel we were not so good with the execution. Like I said earlier, in T20 cricket, the most important thing is execution of your good balls. So we were not that great today. Par, to be very honest, I thought 219 was a good total anyway because we started in a very good manner, we thought we could end up getting 240. But I think 219 was a very good total, especially having six or seven bowlers in your side who can bowl. We need to just, you know, understand the batters, how they're going to bat, what they're going to do. But I think we were lacking at that point of time. And that showed in their batting that it was pretty easier for them to score runs in the end. I think in today's scenario, you don't have to plan much. You just do it before the game. You know which batter is used to hitting where. You just know which areas if one side was longer, we were trying to use that boundary. But like I said earlier, when you don't execute balls, you have nothing and you just end up giving those 10-20 runs in every over. So it also depends on how they bat and they were pretty good tonight. No, to be very honest, we don't think so much. Like I said, it's very simple cricket. You know, you go into bat, you score runs. Your bowlers have a total. You try to defend it. But at the same time, if you don't bowl in the right areas, if you're not planning properly, then you can't stop runs in the middle. So, yeah, it all depends on your planning and execution, to be very honest.
