Match Overview
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns in the 11th match of IPL 2026 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 5. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The RCB openers - Phil Salt and Virat Kohli - got off to a cautious start before upping the ante from the fourth over onwards. Kohli was the aggressor, however, the Indian legend could not last long tonight succumbing to Anshul Kamboj for 28 off 18 balls with Shivam Dube taking his catch this time around after dropping the 37-year-old earlier.

In-form batter Devdutt Padikkal joined Salt and the duo maintained a healthy run rate throughout their stay at the crease. At the halfway mark, RCB were 91/1 as CSK needed to find a breakthrough soon which they did. Salt, who was nearing his half century, was caught at square leg for 46(30) as skipper Rajat Patidar walked out to the middle.
Padikkal continued to bat in his own way and the left-hander played a key role in building a solid foundation for the potential launch later. The 25-year-old, in the process, completed his consecutive fifty off 28 balls before being bowled by Jamie Overton for 50(29). RCB were 151/3 at this stage with 14 overs gone and out came Tim David who brought a storm along with him.
Patidar took on the mantle initially, striking the ball cleanly for boundaries before David got going. The duo hit the balls to various parts of the ground as the CSK bowlers looked clueless. David, in particular, was muscling the deliveries for sixes as RCB crossed the 200-run mark in the 18th over. What came next put CSK way behind in the game as Overton's third over yielded 30 runs. All those runs were scored by David who completed his half century as well off just 21 balls. Sanity returned next over as Kamboj conceded 13 runs in the 20th over as RCB finished at a massive 250/3.
CSK had a disastrous start to their steep chase as Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre were out tamely and cheaply by just the eighth ball of the innings. Nine balls and 20 runs later, it was Sanju Samson's turn to be dismissed in Gaikwad's fashion for a mere nine runs.
CSK were tottering at 30/3 in the third over as Sarfaraz Khan and Kartik Sharma combined for a 47-run 21-ball stand before the former was out for 50(25). The passionate right-hander gave hopes to CSK fans with his quickfire half century, but his dismissal right after the powerplay impacted CSK's journey drastically.
Kartik Sharma (6 off 3) and Shivam Dube (18 off 13) could not do much as CSK were six down after the duo's wickets in the 10th over with 108 runs on the board. The writing appeared on the wall now, but the lower order was not willing to give up easily. Overton, who went for runs, compensated with a valuable 37 off 16 balls while Prashant Veer who was playing just his second IPL match made an impressive 43 off 29 balls.
The lower order contributions provided a very slim ray of hope, but a miracle was not to happen tonight. In the end, CSK fell short by 43 runs as RCB bowlers performed a commendable job.

Tim David
David's innings proved to be the difference between the two teams in the end. Courtesy of the Australian's knock, the game went beyond CSK's reach if one considers the margin of victory. Starting steadily, David picked up pace later and launched off Overton. The highlight of his knock was the pull shot which went for a 106-metre six out of the stadium.
Turning Point
The fourth-wicket unbroken 99-run 36-ball partnership between Patidar and David made matters worse for CSK. The duo began their stint in the middle together after the team was 151/3 in the 15th over. Before CSK knew it, they were chasing 251 - a target that had once looked like settling around 225.
What the captains said
Winning Team Captain, Rajat Patidar (RCB)
"It feels great. Initially, ball was stopping a bit. The way Phil (Salt) and (Virat) Kohli played, it was superb. I enjoyed a lot of sixes (towards the end) from the non-striker's end. My mindset was clear - to put pressure on the bowler, and wanted to hit sixes. He (David) is a specialist, and one of the best finishers. He is consistent and one of the best finishers I have ever seen. (On David's 106m six) I was just looking at the ball. They (Krunal and Suyash) are wicket-taking bowlers. The way Suyash came and bowled those four beautiful overs, it was great. Whenever I come under pressure, I look to KP (Krunal Pandya) and I have that much belief in him. Everyone is looking great and in a good mindset, and looking forward to the next game."
Losing Team Captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)
"(On scoring more than 200 eventually) I was also a little surprised, to be honest. Great fight by Sarfaraz, Overton, Veer and to some extent, Dube. If I would have contributed more, maybe it could have been different. It (the loss) was definitely on me today. (On David's innings) Almost got a wicket of him but it was an illegal delivery. After that, he smacked it all around the park. Hats off to him. (On if they should have had powerplay wickets) We would have had, if we would have taken an early chance of Kohli. We would have had momentum. We still had the game in our hands till the 13-14th over (but let momentum slip after it)."
