Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bounced back to winning ways in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), beating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in Match 34 on Friday, April 24, at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. After being put in to bat first, GT posted a good score of 205/3 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on a splendid hundred from Sai Sudharsan.

In reply, RCB chased down the target in 18.5 overs with Virat Kohli (81 off 44) and Devdutt Padikkal (55 off 27) leading the run chase. Earlier in the day, Gujarat got off to a measured start in the first three overs, before Sai Sudharsan finally found his feet.

The southpaw brought up his half-century off 33 deliveries as captain Gill played second fiddle to his opening partner. The duo stitched a massive 128-run stand off 76 balls for the first wicket. After a massive opening stand, RCB got their first success as Gill (32 off 24) got holed out to long on against Suyash Sharma (1/36).

Despite losing his opening partner, Sudharsan continued in top gear and brought up his third IPL century off 57 balls. He was dismissed shortly after, as Josh Hazlewood (1/40) caught him off his own bowling. Following his dismissal, Jos Buttler (25 off 16), Washington Sundar (19* off 12), and Jason Holder (23* off 10) also made valuable contributions, guiding Gujarat to 205/3 in their 20 overs.

In reply, RCB began with a new opening pair as Jacob Bethell started the innings alongside Virat Kohli. The youngster was dismissed cheaply  (14 off 10) as he hit Mohammed Siraj straight to Shahrukh Khan at cover point. After the early blow, Devdutt Padikkal (55 of 27) joined Virat Kohli at the crease (81 off 44).

The duo brought RCB in the driver’s seat, adding 115 runs for the second wicket off 59 balls and left their team on 154/3, needing 52 runs to win off 38 balls. However, Jitesh Sharma (10 off 6) and Rajat Patidar’s (8 off 5) quick dismissals gave GT a sniff back into the game.

In the end, Krunal Pandya (23* off 12) and Tim David’s (10* off 9) took RCB home in 18.5 overs with their unbeaten 33-run stand off 20 balls. Meanwhile, following their win, RCB rose to second spot on the IPL 2026 points table with ten points from seven games, while Gujarat is on seventh spot with six points from seven matches.

Player of the Match

Virat Kohli was adjudged Player of the Match for his sensational innings. He scored 81 (44) with the help of eight fours and four sixes. His partnership with Devdutt Padikkal dampened the spirits in the GT’s camp and almost sealed the game in RCB’s favour.

Turning Point

Virat Kohli flicked Mohammed Siraj on his very first delivery towards Washington Sundar at mid-wicket. However, the all rounder ended up dropping him, and the reprieve came back to haunt Gujarat as Kohli played a gem of a knock to put RCB on top.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru):

Many lessons were learned from the game. Bhuvi and Hazlewood started well, hitting their lengths and the other bowlers followed their lead. We knew anything around 200 was a good total to chase. In the last 3 overs, I thought our execution was spot-on, especially the yorkers. Kohli and particularly Padikkal were outstanding, I enjoyed watching them bat. We did lose a few wickets in the middle overs, that's something we'll go back and look to correct in the upcoming games.

Losing Captain, Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans):

Yeah definitely. From till 16th till 19th, those 3 overs we didn't get any boundaries and those were crucial for us. At the end of the powerplay we were in a good position but we were unable to take wickets. When a batsman gets dropped on nought, it's tough on the fielder, but it's important how you come back. We had our moments. I think they batted brilliantly in the middle-overs. When I was batting, when Krunal bowled, it was gripping and I wanted to take my chances. (on Sai Sudharsan) He was quite upset how he got out in the last two games and I hope he gives more strike to me in the powerplay in the next game.
