IPL 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad's David Payne ruled out due to ankle injury

Fast bowler David Payne has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), informed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday, April 16. Payne was signed as a replacement for Jack Edwards at SRH for Rs 1.5 Crore. He has played one ODI for England and has a wealth of experience in T20 cricket with 306 scalps to his name.

Payne sustained an ankle injury during practice, informed SRH through their social media handles. The fast bowler played two matches this season, taking two wickets for his side. SRH are yet to announce his replacement.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians (MI) have also dealt with an injury blow as Atharva Ankolekar has also been ruled out of the tournament. Anolekar failed to recover from his knee injury, which he sustained during the Ranji Trophy earlier this year. 

The left-arm spinning all-rounder was part of India’s U19 World Cup team in 2020 and was also the Player of the Match in the final of the ACC U19 Asia Cup against Bangladesh in 2019.

In his place, MI have signed Krish Bhagat as a replacement player. The 21-year-old has played seven First Class games and nine List A matches for Punjab. He is a right-arm medium pacer and has also registered a half-century in List A cricket.

MI reeling at ninth spot

In a media release, MI revealed how Bhagat impressed the coaching staff with his dedication and work ethic. 

"Krish has consistently impressed the coaching staff with his dedication, work ethic, and the quality he brings to every session and practice games that he played for Mumbai Indians. His commitment and development over the years, both in domestic and at Mumbai Indians practise sessions this season have earned him this well-deserved opportunity to transition into the main squad," said MI in a statement.

Meanwhile, MI are reeling at the second last spot (ninth) on the points table with just one win from four matches so far. They will next take on Punjab Kings at on April 16 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
