Joe Root against reinstating night curfew after Brydon Carse nightclub incident

England Test captain Joe Root is extremely disappointed following the latest nightclub incident involving fast bowler Brydon Carse, which has plagued their cricket team. Carse was involved in a nightclub incident while celebrating Durham’s win over Derbyshire in the County Championship.

He was briefly arrested outside a bar in Derby, and a clip of him being seen in handcuffs went viral on social media. The police have confirmed that he had been briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and was subsequently released.

In the aftermath of the incident, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has asked the Cricket Regulator to investigate the incident, and Carse has also been removed from the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan. Speaking on the matter for the first time, Root said that he’s hacked off and extremely disappointed that the team has been constantly in news for matters apart from cricket.

"If I'm being brutally honest, I'm really hacked off. I'm really disappointed that after last week's performance, we sat here and we're talking about something nothing related to it at all. In terms of the incident itself, it's obviously with the Regulator. There's not a lot I can say on it. It's in their hands now. I've spoken to Brydon. When I first found out, my first concern was him as a person, as someone I've spent a lot of time with [and who has] been involved in this dressing-room,” Root said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s.

Root also revealed that Carse was very apologetic and understanding of his actions.

"You obviously develop personal relationships with players, and I don't think I'm speaking out of turn by saying he's very upset, very apologetic, and understands his actions. I'm sure when he gets his chance, he will say that himself. It's not the isolated incident itself. It's the fact that we continually keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it's detracting from what we're doing on the field,” he added.

Joe Root still against night curfew

The first thing Joe Root had done after being appointed England Test captain again was to remove the team’s midnight curfew. Despite the latest incident involving Carse, he stands firm by his decision.

"I still don't believe that's the way to go. It's important we create something bigger than that. It's about having something long-lasting that we can be proud of, that we can pass on to the next generation of players for them to evolve and be proud of. Clearly, we're not portraying ourselves how we want to, and I think we've got an opportunity to build a culture that's very strong, something that we can be proud of, that's player-driven,” he said.

He reiterated that they want to set examples through their performances both on and off the field.

"We want the supporters to look at us and not just revere what we do on the field, but off it as well. Over the next little while, as leader of this team with Stephen [Fleming], and with the group of players themselves, it's creating something that is just that,” said Root.

Meanwhile, England have added Sonny Baker to their squad for the second Test in place of Carse. England are leading the series 1-0, following their win by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. The second Test begins on Thursday, August 27 at Lord’s, London.
