Ishan Kishan has climbed to the top of the ICC men's T20I batting rankings, overtaking teammate Abhishek Sharma to become the new world No. 1 batter in the format.
The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter has achieved a career-best rating of 876, while Abhishek has slipped to No. 2 following a relatively quiet series against Ireland. The latest rankings update also brings an end to Abhishek's impressive 12-month reign as the world's top-ranked T20I batter.
Ishan's rise to the summit comes on the back of a sensational campaign at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Across nine innings, he amassed 317 runs at an average of 35.22 and a blistering strike rate of 193.29. His tournament featured three half-centuries, including a match-defining knock against Pakistan in the high-profile clash at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The rankings battle is set to continue, with both Ishan and Abhishek named in India's squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, beginning on July 1. The opening match will be played at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.
The series presents a significant opportunity for both batters. Ishan will be aiming to strengthen his grip on the No. 1 ranking with another string of impactful performances, while Abhishek will be eager to bounce back and reclaim the top spot in the ICC T20I batting charts. Notably, Ishan is now the four India player (male) to become the No. 1 ranked batter in the ICC men's T20I rankings. Abhishek, Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli have scaled the milestone before.
Meanwhile, Australia's Travis Head has become the No. 1 ranked Test batter in the world after Harry Brook (second) and Joe Root (third) failed to deliver commanding performances against New Zealand in the Trent Bridge Test.
