Marizanne Kapp opts out of WBBL contract with Melbourne Stars

Marizanne Kapp has withdrawn from the upcoming edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), citing international commitments. She will not feature for Melbourne Stars this season despite having one year left on her contract. The South Africa allrounder wants to prioritise game time for her national side.

The Proteas are scheduled to play a Test match against India from December 9, just three days after the WBBL 2026 final. The one‑off Test will set the tone for a multi‑format series that also includes three ODIs and three T20Is.

Melbourne Stars expressed disappointment at losing Kapp but acknowledged her priorities at this stage of her career.

“We are of course disappointed to be without someone of Marizanne’s calibre this season,” Melbourne Stars general manager James Rosengarten said in a statement. “She is one of the world’s finest all‑round players, but we understand her priorities and it will present another list opportunity for the Stars.”

Stars have reinforced their squad with England’s Amy Jones and Dani Gibson. Jones was the second‑highest run‑getter for the Stars last season behind Meg Lanning, scoring 234 runs in 11 matches at an average of 23.40 and a strike rate of 125.80, including a half‑century.

Gibson contributed 170 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 139.34 and was a key presence down the order. Both players played central roles in the Stars’ run to the Knockout stage, where they lost to Perth Scorchers.

“It was a priority for us to have both Dani and Amy return this season, so we are really pleased with this outcome,” Rosengarten said. “They are both very talented cricketers in multiple ways, which is so valuable in this format.

“We are bolstering our batting line‑up with two different skillsets while also gaining a wicketkeeper and a bowler. They both enjoyed their time in Melbourne, which is a great sign for our club, and they are committed to having success here.”
