Australia have appointed former batter Michael Hussey as coaching consultant for the 2027 Ashes and ODI World Cup, as well as a T20 advisor for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Hussey has previously undertaken short-term stints with the Australian team under Andrew McDonald in recent years, primarily serving as an additional batting consultant ahead of the annual Perth Test.

However, his commentary commitments and coaching roles with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and with Welsh Fire in The Hundred haven’t allowed him to take on a more extended role. CSK recently parted ways with Hussey after he served as batting coach for the franchise since 2018.

He was also offered a position by his long-time colleague at CSK, Stephen Fleming, following the New Zealander’s appointment as England Test head coach earlier this year. However, he instead chose to take up a more significant coaching consultancy role with Australia.

Hussey expressed his excitement about his new role and said that he’s eager to add value to the team in the lead-up to challenging two years.

"I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years. This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period,” Hussey said in a statement.

Andrew McDonald also hailed Hussey for his extensive experience of coaching teams across the globe.

"Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players. Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person,” said McDonald.

Hussey will start his role almost immediately, as he’s set to provide coaching assistance in the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, beginning on November 21, as well as the following Test series against New Zealand.
