Moises Henriques announced his retirement from Australian domestic cricket on Thursday, July 16. He will continue to play Associate cricket for the country of his birth, Portugal, after becoming eligible to feature in World Cup qualifiers. Henriques earlier retired from first-class cricket in March, 2025. He played List A cricket for New South Wales in 2025 and even led Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash League (BBL) final in January.

Henriques finishes his career as the most-capped player in the BBL, having played 154 matches after appearing in all 15 seasons, including a final in his first and last season. He won three BBL titles with Sydney Sixers during the course of his illustrious career and was also a part of their Champions League T20 (CLT20) triumph in 2012.

The 39-year-old also has the most appearances to his name in Australian domestic cricket with 420 domestic matches across all formats, including 110 first-class matches for New South Wales (NSW), 112 List A games and 38 T20 matches.

The all-rounder last played international cricket for Australia in 2021, having represented the country in four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Henriques revealed that he hasn’t been offered a contract by Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season and hence has decided to call it quits.

"I have been very fortunate to call cricket my job for the past 22 years as a professional athlete. Unfortunately for me, I haven’t been offered a contract with the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season. After a bit of deliberation, I think it's time for me to call stumps on my BBL career and any playing commitments with New South Wales cricket as well moving forward. I had interest from other BBL teams, but it just didn't feel right to go elsewhere,” said Henriques in the video message.

He also thanked his teammates for their continuous support and expressed excitement for the next chapter of his life.

“To the people I've been fortunate enough to play with and work alongside, I'd like to thank you. If it weren't for those relationships and the deep care I have for them, I'm sure I would have reached this day much earlier. I think it’s time for me to call stumps on my career and start looking forward to the next chapter of my life,” he added.

Henriques scored over 13,000 runs and scalped over 200 wickets in a career spanning 22 years in domestic cricket.  He also finishes his BBL career as Sixers' leading run-scorer with 3324 runs from 154 matches and is currently second in the competition's all-time list after Chris Lynn.
