Monty Desai resigns as head coach of Canada amid turbulent time

Monty Desai has resigned as the head coach of the Canada men's cricket team, prompting Cricket Canada to invite applications for the role. Under Desai's tenure, Canada played two Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series, one in Scotland and the other at home.

The window to apply for the position shuts down on August 28. Canada's next round of CWC League 2 matches begins on October 9. They'll be up against Nepal and Oman. Oman will host the contests.

Desai thanked Cricket Canada for the opportunity and the learnings which came with the role.

"A short chapter, but a meaningful one," Desai posted on Instagram. "Grateful to Cricket Canada for the opportunity to serve as Interim Head Coach over the past three months. Every environment leaves you with learnings. This experience further strengthened my belief that sustainable performance is built through time, trust, preparation, strong relationships and collective ownership.

"Thank you to the players, support staff and everyone who shared this journey. I leave with gratitude for the relationships built, the lessons learned and the opportunity to contribute.

"Wishing Canadian cricket continued growth and success."

This was Desai's second stint with Canada. He previously worked with them in 2019. His latest stint ends amid a tempestuous time in Cricket Canada. A Canadian Investigative documentary programme, The Fifth Estate, put the fifth over of New Zealand's innings into question, bowled by skipper Dilpreet Bajwa.

It prompted immediate action from the ICC's anti-corruption unit as it launched an investigation to substantiate the allegations. The ICC also suspended Cricket Canada's Associate membership and revoked its funding following "serious breaches of its membership obligations".
