Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have confirmed that MS Dhoni is likely to miss the first two weeks of IPL 2026 as he continues to undergo rehabilitation for a calf strain. It is a huge setback for CSK, who bagged the wooden spoon in the previous season, losing 10 of their 14 games and winning only four.

Arguably not at the peak of his powers anymore, Dhoni's presence has a calming influence on the rest of the squad, and his vast leadership experience rubs off well on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is currently in his early years as captain.

Dhoni holds the record for playing the most matches as captain in the history of the Indian Premier League. The 44-year-old has led in 235 games, winning 136 and losing 97, and two matches yielding no results. He has a win percentage of 57.87% and a loss percentage of 41.27%.

On the contrary, Gaikwad has had a tough initiation to his role as captain. He has captained CSK in 19 games with eight victories and 11 defeats. His win percentage is 42.1, and his loss percentage is 57.89.

Sanju Samson is likely to take up the wicketkeeping gloves in Dhoni's absence and will also be responsible for sharing inputs with Gaikwad, who has his task cut out.

The five-time IPL winners will get their campaign underway with an away game against the 2008 champions, Rajasthan Royals, at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Monday, March 30.

Gaikwad has already confirmed that he will open the innings alongside Samson, clearing the air over the uncertainty that surrounded their opening pair, with India's U19 World Cup-winning captain Ayush Mhatre also a part of the squad.

CSK's squad for IPL 2026:

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, Matthew Short, Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj, Zakary Foulkes, MS Dhoni, Urvil Patel, Sanju Samson, Kartik Sharma, Shreyas Gopal, Khaleel Ahmed, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary, Noor Ahmad, Prashant Veer, Akeal Hosein, Matt Henry, Rahul Chahar
