Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are one of the oldest and most loved franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history. Ever since featuring in the first-ever match of the IPL in 2008 at their home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, they struck a chord with their supporters and have the most enviable and loyal fanbase in the tournament’s history.

Despite not having multiple trophies in their cabinet, RCB have had several memorable seasons in IPL, as their big stars have put on a show for their crazy fandom time and again. With RCB in the middle of another dream campaign in 2026, here’s a look at their top three best seasons in IPL history.

1. 2011

While the 2009 edition is touted as the rise of RCB in the IPL folklore, 2011 etched their name as a pure dominant force with no dearth of batting firepower. Like in most of their seasons, RCB had a slow start in 2011 as well, under the leadership of Daniel Vettori, winning just one out of their first five matches.

However, just when everything seemed wrong with the team, a blessing in disguise came in the form of an injury replacement as Chris Gayle made his way into the team in place of the injured Dirk Nannes. Gayle’s arrival completely transformed RCB's fortunes as the ‘Universe Boss’ slammed a breathtaking match-winning century (102* off 55) in his first game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Riding on the momentum, RCB went on to win eight out of their next nine fixtures and stormed into the playoffs as table toppers. The Gayle Storm blew away every team that came in his way, topping the run scoring charts for the season, with 608 runs from just 12 innings. However, RCB’s dream run ended in a crushing 58-run defeat in the final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Despite missing out on the trophy, RCB won over their fans’ hearts, promising a new era for their franchise.

2. 2016

The RCB of 2016 season will always be remembered as the greatest side, which couldn’t win the IPL trophy. Having several stalwarts in their squad, right from Gayle, AB de Villiers, Shane Watson and the rising young talent of Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul and Yuzvendra Chahal, the team was a complete package.

However, they once again failed to deliver in the first half of the season, winning just two out of the first seven matches. With captain Virat Kohli at the peak of his powers, he inspired his unit to make a comeback for the ages as RCB won six out of their last seven games to finish on second spot.

It almost seemed as if they were destined to win the 2016 season, needing 68 runs from seven overs to lift their maiden title in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), having eight wickets in hand. However, a collapse out of nowhere saw them fall nine runs short of their target and again miss out on the elusive title for the third time.

Kohli played out of his skin throughout the season, finishing with 973 runs from 16 innings with four centuries, both records, but still couldn’t grab hold of the silverware. RCB’s 2016 season remains one of the most poignant chapters of IPL history.

3. 2025

After three heartbreaks in the final, RCB came into IPL 2025 carrying no baggage from the past. It was almost as if they were reborn under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, ending a long drought of victories in the home grounds of the two most dominant IPL teams. They first beat CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for the first time since 2008, and later beat Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium after 11 years.

A team that in the past depended only on the big names to guide them to victories found new match winners in every game.  Out of the 11 victories that RCB registered during the season, they had nine different Player of the Match recipients. Once they were in the playoffs, RCB became a different force altogether as they blew away the table-toppers, Punjab Kings, in Qualifier 1.

They further thrashed them again in the final as the wait of 18 years finally ended for the city of Bengaluru and their adopted son, who had seen several heartbreaks first-hand and finally managed to have a taste of the glory that eluded him for so long. As a result, the 2025 edition of the IPL became RCB’s most memorable season when they turned their tagline to ‘E Sala Cup Namde’ to ‘E Sala cup Namdu.’
