Afghanistan unveiled their squad for the upcoming tour of India on Tuesday, May 26 as Nangyal Kharotai, Bilal Sami and Rahmanullah Zadran received maiden call-ups to the Test team. Afghanistan will take on India in a one-off Test, followed by a three-match ODI series, beginning on June 6.
Wrist spinner Qais Ahmed has also marked his return, having last played Test cricket in February 2024. The most notable absentees from the Test squad are batter Ibrahim Zadran and wrist-spinner Rashid Khan, as both have been rested with Afghanistan set to play the red-ball format for the first time since October 2025.

Zadran is reportedly recovering from a leg injury, while Rashid has been advised to cut down on his red-ball appearances by doctors. Since Afghanistan are not a part of the World Test Championship (WTC), Rashid has opted to restrict his appearances in the longest format. However, both he and Zadran are a part of the ODI squad.
The upcoming tour will feature Afghanistan facing India for the second time in Test cricket after they made their debut in the format in June 2018 against the same opposition. They suffered a hammering loss by an innings and 262 runs in the game, but have registered four wins from ten Tests since then.
