Ricky Ponting labels Australia's loss to Bangladesh 'very embarrassing'

Ricky Ponting has criticised the selectors for not investing in the future and not making key changes to the Test squad in the aftermath of the nine-wicket loss to Bangladesh at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.

Ponting said that he was always against the idea of tinkering with the squad as captain, but one should hit the reset button before change becomes inevitable and it starts going from bad to worse.

“Look, I’m the last one I want to make change. As a captain or as a player, I wanted to keep the group together,” he told Channel 7 at lunch on Sunday.

“It has to get to a bad point before I start saying you ought to leave somebody out. But there had been enough evidence for me coming here to suggest that they weren’t going to lose anything or much at all by starting that regeneration, by maybe bringing in another opener, by maybe bringing in someone at No.3.

“And I think if they lose here, then I think that that has to happen.”

Ponting was miffed at Australia's series-opening loss at the hands of Bangladesh and labelled it a "very embarrassing defeat".

Matthew Hayden feels Australia need to dig into their reserves

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden said that Travis Head should go back to his original position (No. 5) and Alex Carey should be pushed further down the batting order. He also asserted that Australia need to utilise the depth available in the domestic circuit.

"(Opening is) not (Head's) best position. I think his best position is still at No. 5. I don't like Alex Carey coming out at No. 5," Hayden said.

"It just feels a little shaky and uncertain," he added. "And why are we in this position? Australian cricket is so strong. It doesn't need to be in that position, in my opinion."

Australia are 1-0 behind Bangladesh in the ongoing two-match Test series after their nine-wicket loss in Darwin. The second Test will get underway at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on August 22.
