England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming tri-series in Pakistan. England will take on Pakistan and Sri Lanka in ODI tri-series, beginning on October 18. Wrist-spinner Adil Rashid has marked his return to the team after missing the recent ODI assignment against Sri Lanka due to a hand injury.
All-rounder Sam Curran has also returned after recovering from a groin injury, while fast bowler Jofra Archer is rested for the tour. Wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler misses out due to a hamstring injury he sustained in the second ODI against Sri Lanka.
Leg-spinner Mason Crane returns to the England squad after eight years, with his previous appearance for England coming in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney, 2018. Crane is uncapped in the ODI format but has played two T20Is in his career, taking one wicket.
Uncapped players James Coles and Henry Crocombe, who have been part of white-ball squads this summer, are also included.
England men's national selector Marcus North extolled Mason Crane, mentioning his success across both formats for Glamorgan in recent times.
"The tri-series in Pakistan provides another valuable opportunity for our ODI squad to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions. Adil Rashid and Sam Curran return to the squad following their respective injuries, while Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload following a busy summer. Mason Crane has been performing consistently for Glamorgan across both formats during the summer. He’s an experienced, high-class leg-spinner who thoroughly deserves another opportunity at international level," said North in a media release.
The tri-series will be played across two venues in Rawalpindi and Lahore, with the final scheduled to be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday, October 31.
England squad for tri-series in Pakistan: Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, James Coles, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Josh Tongue
