Scotland seamer Brad Wheal has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 30. The decision has been forced by persistent injury issues, with the right-arm pacer admitting that his "body can't cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore."

"I've loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand, and I've made the decision to retire from playing cricket," Wheal said in a statement.

"It's not been an easy decision, but one I am at peace with. I've had four stress fractures in my back and recently underwent knee surgery, and ultimately my body can't cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore.

"It has always meant a lot to me and my family to have had the opportunity to play for Scotland, and it's something I'll always be incredibly proud of."

Wheal made his Scotland debut on January 26, 2016, in an ODI against Hong Kong in Mong Kok. He claimed 27 wickets in 18 ODIs at an average of 23.07 and an economy rate of 4.28. His final ODI appearance came against Nepal in Dallas on November 4, 2024.

His T20I debut also came against Hong Kong, three days after his ODI debut. He picked up 24 wickets in 26 T20Is at an economy rate of 8.60. Wheal was part of Scotland's squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup and played his final international match against Nepal at the tournament, held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, on February 17.

Wheal also played for the English county side Hampshire. He represented Hampshire in 131 matches across formats and played a part in their title-winning campaigns at the Royal London One Day Cup in 2018 and the Vitality Blast in 2022.
