India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has said that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will get his opportunity soon and just needs to be patient. Sooryavanshi didn’t get a chance to play during India’s recent home series against Afghanistan and West Indies, with the team going in with the preferred opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
The 15-year-old last played for the country during the Asian Games 2026 gold medal match against Pakistan and has featured in eight T20Is in his career so far. Addressing the issue of lack of opportunities for the teenage batting sensation, Iyer said that the team already has two openers in Abhishek and Samson, who’ve won them the T20 World Cup 2026 and have been consistent.
"I just keep telling him, you'll get your opportunity. There are two batters [Samson and Abhishek] who have won the [T20] World Cup for you and they have been consistent with the run-scoring as well. So if you are consistent with your processes and your mindset is a bit light - not think too much about getting an opportunity right now,” Iyer said on Broadcast.
Iyer acknowledged that it must’ve been difficult for Sooryavanshi to wait for his chances after a record-breaking IPL campaign.
"I know what must be going on in his mind, especially after a phenomenal IPL season. But you have to wait sometimes, and we've got two fantastic openers who have been consistent throughout,” he added.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's career so far
Sooryavanshi made his debut against England in Manchester earlier this year, becoming the youngest player to debut for the country at the age of 15 years and 99 days old. The southpaw has scored 246 runs from eight innings at an average of 30.75 with two fifties and a highest score of 81.
He will next travel with the team to New Zealand for a five-match T20I series beginning on October 22. It remains to be seen if the team management gives Sooryavanshi an opportunity ahead of Samson, who has two fifty-plus scores in his last eight T20I innings.
