Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain has been slapped with a hefty fine of INR 24 lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate during their five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, in match No. 7 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
This was his team's second offence this season after he was charged INR 12 lakhs against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their season opener at the New International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

Alongside Iyer, the rest of the members of the playing XI against CSK, including the Impact Player, Priyansh Arya, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.
While the penalty may hurt, it wouldn't be able to affect the spirits of Punjab Kings as they comprehensively defeated the five-time winners in their backyard. Chasing 210 to win, Punjab scaled the target down with five wickets and eight balls to spare. Their move to substitute Yuzvendra Chahal with opener Priyansh Arya paid dividends after the latter smoked 39 runs in just 11 balls at a strike rate of 354.54, laced with three fours and four sixes to get Punjab to a flying start.
His ultra-aggressive approach upfront propelled Punjab to 61 in just 4.2 overs, and they got the head-start they wanted. Prabhsimran Singh (43 off 34) and Cooper Connolly (36 off 22 balls) played valuable hands before the skipper, Iyer, smashed a fifty at a strike rate of 172.34 to make the chase a mere formality for Punjab.
Two wins in consecutive games has helped Punjab climb to the top spot on the points table. They have accumulated four points and have a net run rate (NRR) of 0.637. Their bowlers, largely, had a day to forget as nobody except Yuzvendra Chahal managed to hold firm against CSK batters who came all out at them. Chahal gave away 21 runs in three overs at an economy of seven and got the big wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
