Legendary India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) for the Indian Premier League 2027 (IPL 2027). Ganguly will replace Hemang Badani at the helm, who has been in charge of the team since 2024.
Previously, he also served as the mentor for DC during IPL 2019 before becoming the BCCI president. Ganguly has also been actively involved with the DC team in the Women's Premier League (WPL). He served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals and led them to the SA20 final earlier this year.
DC made the announcement through their social media handles with a special video featuring Ganguly. Speaking on his appointment, he expressed his excitement to work with the squad in the lead-up to the upcoming season and build a strong team.
“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team," Ganguly said in a media release.

DC's prolonged poor run in IPL
Ganguly’s appointment is in line with the arrangement between DC's co-owners - GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and Jindal South West (JSW) Sports. Under the franchise's split ownership model, each owner will control franchise operations in alternating two-year cycles.
Delhi Capitals once again failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs in the 2026 season, finishing sixth on the points table with seven wins from 14 matches, having 14 points to their name.
DC haven't qualified for the playoffs in their last four seasons and are yet to win an IPL title, with their best performance being the runners-up finish in 2020.
