Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unveiled the schedule for the upcoming Test series against India on Thursday, July 2. India will be touring the island nation for a two-match series, with the first Test to be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium (GICS), Galle, from August 15-19.

On the other hand, the second Test will be played at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC), Colombo, from August 23-27. The series will be part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–2027 cycle as India will be touring Sri Lanka to play Test cricket for the first time since 2017, when they completed a 3-0 whitewash under Virat Kohli.

Since then, India have toured Sri Lanka several times but only to play ODIs or T20Is. The Shubman Gill-led side will be desperate to turn their fortunes in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle after losing a home series against South Africa.

India are currently ranked fifth in the ongoing cycle with four wins and as many losses from nine matches, having a points percentage of 48.15. India began the cycle with a 2-2 draw against England in an away series, followed by a 2-0 whitewash over West Indies at home in October 2025. However, they also suffered a 0-2 whitewash against South Africa in November, 2025, which pushed them down the WTC standings.

Sri Lanka ranked sixth in WTC standings

They're fresh from a record win by an innings and 300 runs in the recent one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, which wasn't a part of the WTC cycle. On the other hand, Sri Lanka are ranked sixth in the WTC standings, with a win, a loss and a draw in the ongoing cycle, with a points percentage of 44.44%.

They started their cycle with a 1-0 series win over Bangladesh at home but are now trailing 0-1 against West Indies in the two-match series after suffering their heaviest defeat against the Calypso Kings by an innings and 217 runs. Both teams are yet to announce their squads for the series and are expected to unveil them in the coming weeks.

India's recent struggles against quality spin attacks give Sri Lanka a great chance to beat them in a series for the first time since 2008. Out of the eight bilateral Test series played in Sri Lanka, both teams have won three times each, while two have ended in a draw. Meanwhile, India will be looking to complete a hat-trick, having won the last two series in 2015 and 2017 respectively.
