Winning Test matches in Australia is anything but easy, and Bangladesh got one of the most painful reminders of that on Sunday, August 23, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. Australia humbled the tourists by an innings and 51 runs to square the series 1-1 and lifted themselves after an aberration in Darwin.
Day 2 began with Australia adding 45 runs to their overnight total of 165/8. Cameron Green finished as the top scorer (67) for the hosts, smashing 10 fours in his innings. Nathan Lyon also looked at ease with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 32 with the help of four boundaries and a six. Shoriful Islam was the visitors' most successful bowler. He bagged figures of 7/48 - the best returns for the Bangladesh seamer in a Test innings.
Bangladesh were staring at a mountain of 146 when they came out to bat in their second innings, and they couldn't scale it down. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side could only manage to add 31 more than their first innings total as they got bowled out for 95.
Mitchell Starc was once again the pick of the Aussie bowlers and backed his 6/12 up with a 4/39 in the second innings. Pat Cummins (3/10) and Lyon (3/25) claimed three wickets apiece and made light work of Bangladesh's batting order. Starc was named Player of the Match (POTM) and Player of the Series. He claimed 12 wickets at an average of 12.08.
Shanto (31) was the top run-getter for his side in the second innings, whereas veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 29.
The win has helped Australia jump to a points percentage (PCT) of 80.00%. They now have eight wins and two losses in 10 Tests in the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle. Meanwhile, the Bangla Tigers suffered their second loss of the ongoing cycle and have three wins and a draw after six matches. Their PCT has slipped to 55.56, but they remain at No. 4 on the WTC points table.
