Star India batter Virat Kohli congratulated Kane Williamson on a successful career as the New Zealand batter announced his retirement from international cricket. Williamson recently played in the first Test against England at Lord’s and has bid adieu to the game midway through the series.
Kohli and Williamson’s bond goes way back to 2008, when the duo led their respective countries at the Under-19 World Cup. As Williamson hung up his boots, Kohli wrote a heartfelt note for the Kiwi star mentioning how the duo transitioned from competitors to friends over the course of their careers.

“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life’s only just begun,” wrote Kohli on his X account.

During the Under-19 World Cup 2008 semi-final, Kohli even dismissed Williamson, getting him out stumped for 37 (80). The then-India Under-19 skipper was also adjudged Player of the Match for scoring 43 (53) and scalping 2/27 as India beat New Zealand by three wickets.
Kohli and Williamson's bond over the years
11 years later, the duo again faced off as captains of their respective countries in the ICC events at the senior level during the semi-final of the World Cup 2019 and the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021, where Williamson led New Zealand to victories on both occasions.
The duo is counted among the finest batters across all three formats of the modern era, having played numerous match-winning innings for their respective countries. Apart from the on-field competitiveness, both Kohli and Williamson also shared a great bond, often seen engaging in heartwarming conversations.
Despite having entirely different personalities, with Kohli having aggressive traits and Williamson being cool and calm, the duo share a good rapport and have immense respect for each other.
