Hyderabad have secured the services of former India opener Wasim Jaffer on a two‑year contract as mentor ahead of the 2026‑27 season. His role will span both the senior and age‑group teams, bringing his wealth of experience into the heart of Hyderabad cricket.

Jaffer’s coaching journey has been extensive since his retirement. He has guided Odisha, Vidarbha, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, while also serving as a consultant batting coach for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL and the Bangladesh senior men’s national team. His reputation as a teacher of the game is built on patience, technical clarity, and a deep understanding of batting.

Hyderabad’s recent domestic record underlines the significance of Jaffer's appointment. Their Ranji Trophy 2025‑26 campaign was forgettable, with just one win in seven matches. A group‑stage exit in the Vijay Hazare Trophy added to the disappointment. Yet, there were glimpses of promise in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where Hyderabad fought hard but missed out on the final, edged by Haryana on net run rate.

Jaffer’s arrival is part of a broader restructuring at the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). In May, Ambati Rayudu was appointed Head of Cricketing Operations, vowing to bring substantial administrative changes. Rayudu has been outspoken about “rampant corruption” in the past and sees this as an opportunity to reset the culture.

“It is a great opportunity to clean up a few things,” Rayudu wrote on X. “But I am more excited to see the immense cricketing talent in Hyderabad and Telangana flourish and produce more players to represent the country.”

With Jaffer’s technical acumen and vast experience gained through the multiple coaching stints he has had and Rayudu’s determination to overhaul structures, Hyderabad cricket is entering a new chapter. The combination of strong mentorship and fresh administration could be the spark the region needs to rediscover its competitive edge and nurture the next generation of talent.
