West Indies’ historic Test series win over Sri Lanka has turned bittersweet as they have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee and docked ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over rate during the second Test at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.

Javagal Srinath, a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, imposed the sanctions after West Indies were found two overs short of the target, with time allowances taken into consideration. As a result, they have been docked two ICC World Test Championship points.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined five per cent of each player's match fee for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 per cent.

Captain Roston Chase accepted the offence and the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Deighton Buttler.

In addition to the financial penalty, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions mandates the deduction of one WTC point for every over a team falls short. Consequently, West Indies have lost two WTC points, leaving them eighth in the standings with their points percentage (PCT) reduced to 15.

Meanwhile, West Indies registered their first Test series victory in over three years after the second Test ended in a draw. Chasing a fourth-innings target of 302, they reached 109/0 at the close of play and sealed the series 1-0, having already won the first Test by an innings and 217 runs.

It was also their first Test series victory over Sri Lanka after 23 years, as the hosts made a remarkable comeback after losing the ODI series to clinch the T20I and Test assignments.
