WPL 2027: Luke Williams joins Mumbai Indians as head coach

Mumbai Indians have appointed Luke Williams as their new head coach ahead of the Women’s Premier League 2027 (WPL 2027). Williams succeeds Lisa Keightley, who has now been appointed Cricket Australia's national development lead.

Williams has previously tasted success in WPL, having guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to their maiden title in 2024. He also coached the side in the following season in 2025 before stepping away due to his WBBL commitments with Adelaide Strikers.

He also guided Strikers to back-to-back WBBL titles in 2022 and 2023. Williams also served as the assistant coach to Charlotte Edwards when Southern Brave won the Hundred in 2023.

Williams expressed excitement about joining Mumbai Indians, hoping to add another golden chapter in the franchise’s glittering history.

"I'm really excited to be joining Mumbai Indians, a respected and successful organisation, and working with this talented group of players and support staff. We have a great opportunity to build something together, play an exciting brand of cricket and compete for success,” Williams said in a statement released by MI.

How did MI perform in WPL 2026?

MI finished second-last (fourth) in the Women’s Premier League 2026 (WPL 2026) with three wins from eight matches and missed the playoffs for the first time. MI are the joint-most successful team in WPL history, winning the trophy twice along with RCB. He’s also currently serving as the assistant coach of the England women's team.

Meanwhile, Keightley, who was appointed MI’s head coach ahead of the 2026 edition. She will continue to be head coach of Sydney Thunder in the WBBL alongside her work with CA.
